①芸術論の研究から芸術作家を目指す。

人生の道を開くという事は　課せられた社会での仕事を見つけることから始まり、私は　生活の手段を考えなくてはなりませんでした。

しかし、生活を築くこと、家族を守ることが、もっとも重要なことです。２つの仕事は　苦悩が多いいことでありました。

いつも、絵画は　趣味か仕事か　疑問がありましが「生活費を作るための手段として」多くの仕事をしました。

最後の仕事として　住宅の写真撮影をやっておりましたが、名刺に「＆画家」と入れましたところ、

見ず知らずの人に　絵を見せてくれと言われ、はじめて　自分の絵を売る事が出来たのは　満37才の時でした。喜び勇んで納入いたしました。

それをきっかけに　絵以外の仕事　すなわち、二足のわらじには　終止符を打ち　翌日から 毎日、会社や個人宅を飛び込み　販売活動をしたのです。

プロとしての出発点であると同時に、波乱万丈と言うか、恥じ書きと苦難の人生の始まりでもありました。

きっと、飛び込み画家は　珍しい事だったでしょう。様々な人々と触れ合う事の始まりでもありました。

　見向きもしない人、好意的な人、様々です．以外にも画家の訪問販売をしている人がいたのには　びっくりいたしました。

木炭の肖像画を描いている人達なのです。ひょんな事から　私も肖像画をトライして、油絵肖像画を描く様になりました。

肖像画は　実物そっくりに描くことが目標でありましたので　努力の「かい」という成果の現れるものでした。写真から輪郭線を写し取る方法を工夫したりしたものです。

肖像画以外にも絵画注文が多く、家屋や想い出の風景等の制作です。

それから、画家として、生計をたて約４０年間超となりましたが、

そのうちの２０年間は、写実絵画を中心とした注文画制作による生活を支える為の作品創りに明け暮れたのです。

肖像画も、フリーハンドでそっくりに描くことが十分と言えるほど描けるようになりました。モンタージュ制作もできるようになりました。

写真で描く場合でも同じように描けばよいのですが、実際の姿を求めるものです。

６０歳の写真でも生存８０歳ならば、それに近い姿にすることです。

ある時　応援者の一人から、「島田君の作品は　将来値上りするのかね？」と尋ねられたのですが、

わたしは　戸惑いましたが　ちょっと間をおいて、「それは全く考えていない」と言ったのです。そのままの本心でした。

当時の画壇と言えば、前にも話しましたが、写実、具象絵画の横行で、技術的には　達人ばかりでしたので、

美術界における自分の存在など考えられるものではなかったのです。高校時代から、抽象画を描いていましたので、眼中にもなかったのです。

ましてや　絵画の表現様式は　すべて出尽くしているとも言われていましたので、　独自のものを創り出すということなど　考えることもできませんでしたし、

「それは　まったく考えていない」と、そう言わざるを得ませんでした。

当然の如く、「つまらないなあ～」と、がっかりした言葉が返ってきたのです。　私は　暫く沈黙していたのですが　こう言いました。

「値段が高くなるかどうかは別にして、徹底的に研究し、独特で新しい作品を創りだし、評価されるように頑張って見る」と。

その時は　何の当ても　ありませんでしたが　そう言わざるを得なかったのです。

当時、作品の持ちこみ販売とか　注文絵画制作と言う仕事は　受注も販売も比較的安定した仕事でもありました。

世間では　バブル崩壊後の不況風が吹き、各企業の経営者達の考え方が見直され、リストラ、企業の縮小などの大転換をしなければならない時代でもありました。

リーマンショックから神戸阪神の震災、2年後の東北、東関東の地震においては　有名画廊も画商も廃業となり、画家の仲間達も不況に苦しみ始め、画家を転換する人が、

多くなりました。「教える事」に専念する人、他の職業に移る人、生活収入は　画業ではない所に求め、転職してしまった人が多くなりました。

不況時代と言うか、今までと違った　これからの時代、真面目さだけではどうしようもない時代,　絵画で言うなら　写実的というか、具象絵画を中心とした業界も、

素人的ステータスシンボルによる購入者等の浮かれた時代の作品が影を潜め、ほんものの芸術探求の時代となってくるのではないかと思われたのです。

生きるのに不安や恐怖が一層高まってくる時代、知覚や感性的向上と言うより、思考力を高め、想像力を発揮できる能力を身に付ける時代と思ってやみませんでした。

ただ、美術を専門に学んだ事ぐらいで　写実、具象から脱皮する事など到底考えられません。

大学を含め、絵画業界そのものが　対象を「噛み砕く」事さえできず、　写実、具象画の範疇から脱皮していないと考えられたからです。

美大、芸大に、芸術論の学者が居ないように思います。指導者不在といってよいのでは　ないでしょうか。

　私は　写実的具象絵画の作品から　制作の楽しさも失いかけていたのです。

きっと、物事に従順でなければならないという考え方や技術主義に耐え切れず　不満足ということになったのではないかと思うのです。　

どうあるべきか　考えなくては　成りませんでした。

創造するものとは　人間の目的を打ち建て、大地に意味と未来を与えるものである。こういうものが、初めてあることが善であり、

又、悪であるという事を創造するのです。(ニーチェ)

絵画は　兎も角、人間の精神生活で　最も重要な事の一つとして　「思考や想像力を発揮できる事である」と思うのです。

そのことは　昔から言われている事であり、人間社会のリーダーの素質に欠かせないものとも考えておりました。

人間の生き方や、指針への方向転換の重要性を考えるとき、絵画の役目は精神的に　人生を先導する芸術作品への転換の時期を迎えようとしているのだと思いました

。しかし、それが何だかは　この時点では　解りませんでした。

それから、手探りの制作でしたが、それらしいものが出来ても、ただ、考える事ばかりで、進展しません。２～３年経過して、基礎から学ぶことにしたのです。

武蔵野美術大学短期大学を５３歳で　新しき様式は見つからずして卒業しました。

そこで、慶應義塾大学に編入学し、哲学を学ぼうとしたのですが、社会科学概論におけるシステム理論を学ぶことで　寺尾誠教授から学ぶ」こととなったのです。

恩師は　１５歳位の差である年齢の私に　同情して様々な教えを下さいました。年間でしたが、続けて　御指導くださいましたが、授業料が払えず、除籍となったかと思います。

師の教えが、芸術作家を目指すための計画書を構成したプログラムの「基底材」となり、哲学者の理論と宇宙量子学と植物生態学を組成した製作となったのです。

Since then, I have made a living as a painter for more than 40 years, and during those 20 years, I devoted myself to creating works that support my life by creating custom-made paintings centered on the real thing.
